In my history for him, he did spend a year and a half in Xing, but that was over 20 years ago. I'm thinking that he knows scattered words and phrases - so like in the scene here from his POV, it wouldn't be too hard for him to figure out what Li Xue was saying - but he doesn't really know the language. Um, I'm thinking that makes sense ^^;.
