Vespa vs. Fly
We went to the Piaggio dealership yesterday and looked around, talked to a very nice sales person. Leaving aside the fact that, in many ways, I really shouldn't be thinking about getting a new vehicle right now, here's how my thoughts sit at the moment:
the MP3 is coolness on wheels, but alas, my Cool Thing budget isn't that large. So it's down to the Vespa LX 150 or the Fly 150.
They have the same engine, more or less the same power (the specs on the Fly have the max MPH 2 higher than the Vespa - 61 instead of 59). The Fly is cheaper; but the Vespa keeps its value better. The Vespa also has a seam-welded metal body, while the Fly is more plastic. The Vespa is lighter (! how did they do that with a metal body??), and gets better gas milage, 72 mpg instead of 65. The Vespa also has a slightly bigger gas tank. The Fly has a more modern, slightly more motorcycle-ish look to it, but the Vespa - is a Vespa. That just adds coolness.
My frugal side (when it's not yelling "what the hell are you thinking??") says to get the Fly. Everything else is leaning toward the Vespa, but only leaning. I like the metal body. I like the Vespa name. I like the look of it. I like how it holds its value, even though I can't imagine reselling it any time soon.
Decisions, decisions...
