Museums, cylinders, and painting on silk

We went to the Asian Art Museum yesterday, which is always and all-day affair and usually exhausting. But we wanted to see the Cyrus Cylinder while it was here. It's a fascinating exhibit, both historically and artistically.

But also there was Japanese Art from the Larry Ellison Collection, and it got me thinking about wall scrolls. More specifically how many of them are painted on silk.

Now you can't really just paint right onto plain silk because it will bleed. Silk painting usually uses a resist of some kind but the wall scrolls don't look like they use that. I would assume the silk is treated in some way - like the way linen or cotton canvases are treated and gessoed - but my Google-fu is not turning up what I want to know. You can get silk already prepared for painting, but I can't find anything that says what is traditionally used. Or even not traditionally, I'd settle for a modern equivalent.

And then I found this artist who paints freehand on silk with sumi ink. But all it says is that she uses a fixing solution in the ink to make the garment washable.

And I'm sitting here going "What fixing solution? What do you use?? How do you prepare the fabric??? AAAAAAAAHH!!" But my Googling has turned up even less on this than on silk wall scrolls.

But goddamit I wanna know how she does that!!

(Also still want to know how wall scrolls are made.)

FMA: Hands Off by ~dragonimp on deviantART

The WIP of this that I'd uploaded got snagged by the group History of Cool, which kind of made me scratch my head because:

1) I'd put in in my scrapbook which, as far as I know, do not show up on the main page so how did they find it? The keywords I used are pretty specific to FMA and it's not an FMA group. Best guess is someone who has me on their watch list, probably someone I've forgotten about because they never comment.

2) This has got to be the most random group I've seen, what is it even about? As far as I can tell it's just whatever anyone thought was cool.

3) Where did they put it? It's in my scrapbook but it doesn't look like groups have a scrapbook equivalent, so where the hell is it? ^^;

But eh, I'm glad someone thought it was "cool" XD

I've been more or less forgetting about Elfwood for lack of material to put up there. Today I got a comment notification and, of course, it's a troll comment 9_9. The few troll comments I've gotten have all been on Elfwood and only on the two naturalistic pastel portraits. Those seem to offend people's sensibilities or something, I dunno. But the things they pick to rag on amuse me.

And gaaaah I should really clean that gallery out, old art is old XP

Ed's change of expression was completely unintentional. I don't shy away from fixing things in photoshop but in this case I liked the inked lines just as well as the pencils.

This is the picture with the splat, too, but you can't really see it in the colored version (sadly).

When inking, if you decide to brace one hand against the other, you might want to ensure that the bottom hand doesn't slip off the easel.

But I dunno, I kinda like the splat. I think I'll keep it.

On an unrelated note, Dreamwidth has announced that the community importer should be live in the next few weeks. It'll only be available to paid accounts at first to control the influx, but will then be open to everyone. Details are over here toward the bottom of the post.

Post-Walk update

Back from the Art Walk - well, back from grabbing dinner after the Art Walk - and it went well. I wasn't in a prime location but it could have been worse, and as late as I registered I'm not going to complain. I was in the shade for most of the day, which was a bonus. I did make a few sales - not many, but some. Both candy corn chokers went to a lady who bought them for her daughters, which makes me happy; those pieces always said "little girls" to me. And I have a short list of things to do differently next time, which is doing pretty good for what's essentially my first show! Tomorrow I'll update the Etsy shop and take it off vacation mode, and then add up the sales so I can send the coordinators the commission check.

I just realized I'd put that painting [icon] up at devART and PaperDemon but forgot to put it up at my portfolio. I should do that tomorrow, too ^^;.

Me: Which, ironically, I did by muddying it in places.
Mom: o_O

She did get how that works after thinking about it for a moment, but her initial reaction was pretty amusing XD.

Y-con charges $6 per piece, so I was thinking of submitting 4-5. These are the pieces I submitted to Fanime, so they're already matted, and I was thinking of the base picture for the Holiday Card as well. So, which do you think?

Con wrap-up

No bids; no one wanted my art. Disappointed but not surprised, that's on a par with how my stuff is generally received.

Aside from that and the general lack of organization the con went really well. I wish I'd been able to get the costume done, but that kind of sewing was really not going to happen. It's still not going to happen, not any time soon. But I really enjoyed the panels - though the chairs in those rooms were killing my back for some reason - and got some nifty swag, so it was a good weekend.

I also found a local(ish) art group and am pretty excited about that - I've been needing some source of critiques, never mind the whole support and socializing aspect. And they welcome writing as well as visual art.

So yeah, that's about it. Back to the real world, which right now is knocking on doors and annoying people.

I have a lust for art supplies that goes beyond their objective usefulness. It doesn't matter that I have six untouched canvases at home, if I walk past a display of canvases I want some. If it's of drawing pads I want drawing pads, even though I have several. I have a full set of pencils and more mechanical pencils than I could use but if I walk past a display I want some (The ones I bought today were totally justified. No, really - PenAgain is awesome and I've been wanting ergonomic pencils ever since I found the pens. But that doesn't excuse lusting after pencils that are basically duplicates of ones I already have.) I've yet to get the hang of brush pens and never ink in anything but black, but when I saw a pack of 4 color Prismacolor brush pens I wanted them. Paints, pastels, markers, clay - hell, the cleaners get me excited (no, I haven't been sniffing them). This made things even more difficult when I thought I might have to give up art, walking by an art store was like double torture. Now it's just trying to justify the expense. (I want more pan pastels. And the proper tool for them, since I somehow missed it when I bought the first batch.)

I'd worry, except a lot of people do this with things like fabric and yarn. My stash tendencies just extend to, uh, pretty much anything to do with art.

(Triggered by walking through Office Depot - looking for laminating pouches, something completely unrelated - and getting caught by their relatively small display of art supplies that was basically a shrine to Prismacolor.)

Completed my attack on the house today in the family/computer/storage room, which involved having to shift a huge amount of stuff. I did most of this in the morning, because I couldn't complete the case I had for work until the afternoon. When I have something looming like that, I can't settle to anything that might suck me in, because I might not come back out in time. So podcasts and cleaning it was. But the house is now better vacuumed than it has been in years.

I rewarded myself by taking my scooter out (which I haven't been able to do in a while, thanks to the rain and my allergies) and heading to the craft store. I picked up some Sculpy and a few other things (like a mini canvas - it's so cute!), and then spent most of the rest of the day working on my latest sculpture. I knew I would need at least a 4-hour block of time for this part, so this is the first chance I've gotten.

Tomorrow I will be on the computer, I promise.

We have bright shiny new double-paned argon windows! Unfortunately the clearing/installation/cleanup has pretty much eaten up both yesterday and today (as well as several hours earlier in the week) and my computer time has been limited. Yesterday my computer was off and pulled away from the wall for the whole morning and well into the afternoon, until I finally got to where I could shove the furniture back into position.

Of course this all means I didn't really get any writing done ^^;. But! I'm into the rewriting now.

I did get a start on the postcard which is my other obligation for help_haiti. That's going to have to go slowly, though.
(Zakai, I am working on that other picture, too, I haven't forgotten it! It's just, well, going to go slow.)

All right, my computer has issues whenever it's turned off for an extended period of time (it seems happiest when I leave it on for days and days, go fig) - I thought it was doing okay, but just now I noticed the Finder is not responding, and it wigged out when I tried to open iTunes earlier. So I'm going to have to restart, and then put it to sleep for the night, because it's gotten late.

I remember reading in Stephen King's On Writing the idea that we all write for a "perfect reader." His is his wife. It made a lot of sense to me because that's exactly what I do, or did. For original fiction, my perfect reader is my mom. She's also my editor.

But I realized I don't have that for fanfic (either one). I've unconsciously fallen into thinking I did a few times, only to be disappointed. I've tried to distance myself from it, but doing that is not easy and feels unnatural. I think it's only normal to write with someone in mind. So who am I writing for? Does it matter?

Not that I've been writing. I've been doing a lot of thinking about writing the last few days, but I haven't been able to get myself to sit down and put words to anything. Part of the problem is that I'm going to feel guilty no matter what I work on, and I haven't really wanted to deal with that. I know people are waiting for the fanfic, but Silver has been sitting for so long that anyone who might have been following it has probably given up. As far as I can tell, anyway. But this is my baby and I need to finish it.

Not that I've been completely unproductive. I rediscovered the joys of velour and pastel dust, and impossible to open fixative cans. I can't even express how it feels to be able to draw again. I still have to be careful, but it's not making me want to curl up and weep afterwards.

Tomorrow I will get back on the writing. Though on what, I'm not sure.

I realize I'm out of step with most people on the community art sites, in that I comment much more than I +fav. In fact I fav very rarely. I mean, they're supposed to be my favorites, right? It takes a lot more than a "oh hey, that's cool" reaction for something to be a favorite. I also - speaking from the other side - like getting comments much more than +favs, so that's the way I operate. It's not that I don't appreciate favs, but being one of fifty pictures the person added that day sort of lessens the impact. Plus, they're impersonal, and don't convey any feedback other than "I liked this."

I also sometimes have the urge to say, "out of all my artwork, you're +fav'ing that piece of crap?" But I realize it's a totally subjective process and there's no accounting for taste. But I start feeling more than a little cynical when quick doodles get more attention than the pieces I worked my ass off on.

Part of me is saying that I should be thankful for what little I get. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for any and all feedback. But the lack of rhyme and reason makes me cynical at times.

"Shadows of War" finished and up

Between work, my back acting up again (nowhere near as bad as before, but enough to be an annoyance), and RL just generally getting in the way, yesterday was the first time I was able to get back to painting. It was aggravating, because all I had left to paint was Hughes' uniform. Of course, as soon as that was done, I realized the background was far too light. Thankfully easily fixed, though, so it's finished and up at the various art sites. I'm really happy with the way this turned out, it comes very close to what I was picturing.

Writing has ... not been happening, the last several days. Work has been crazy busy with the summer reading game starting, but I was off Sunday and today and just .. haven't been able to write. I got a little done on Sunday, but nowhere near what I wanted. It's not that I don't know what's going to happen, the plot actually resolved itself fairly well Sunday, but when I sit down to write everything that tries to come out is flat and clunky. Like I've regressed back to high school or something.

I read over some of my fics and parts of them read like a tennis shoe in the dryer. And I think, why didn't anyone tell me this was awkward? Then I remember that most people are afraid to leave negative comments. And I start thinking that everyone's just being nice and is too polite (or scared) to tell me it sucks. And, oh yeah, did I mention I've kinda been in one of my "the internet fucking SUCKS" moods lately?

Really, though, I think I've been worn out from work and either allergies or a mild cold/flu (probably allergies), which hasn't been the best for my mood OR any sort of thinking.

I did get a tiny bit of painting done today, so it wasn't all wasted. I really should wash my watercolor palette, though, it's running out of clean places to mix colors. And now my wrist hurts.
