SacAnime and life in general

I started the new job, and it's going fine, although right now I am *ahem* a LITTLE BIT peeved at my schedule being changed from a 6:00-10:30 (that's AM, folks) shift to a 4:30-9:30 (PM) yesterday without my knowledge, but other than that. I'm working in the print center at the local OfficeMax, so I get to work with printers and trimmers and laminators and binders (when I'm not working the floor or the cash register). And yeah, I'm horribly under-employed, but at least it's money coming in. I'm still adjusting to the new schedule, which is why I've been even more MIA than usual. I've been spending the majority of my free time making food or working on a sewing commission I need to finish up and have barley sat down at the computer.

And also, last weekend was SacAnime and we had a blast! I mean, the panels all looked lame, there was no art gallery, and the Dealer's Hall and Artist's Alley were in the same room (which is still think is a poor design), but 75% of the reason I go to cons anymore is to hang out with folk and that was awesome. Tierfal is amazing and sweet and the most adorably huggable Ed you ever saw, and I got to meet Mthaytr and Inkdropfox (who IS Alfons Heinderich), and we took lots of shippy pictures and generally goofed around. (Some of which you've probably seen if you're on my Facebook, because tumblr mobile's latest update apparently decided to turn on the crosspost feature without telling me. ^^;) I'm in the process of putting them all up on flickr and I can link the albums here, too, if anyone's interested. AND ALSO I got to meet Hacha who gave me arts!!! These ones!! Everyone was super sweet and we all had a great time.

Still playing catch-up with Life. Hope everyone is doing well, and I'll try to peek in a little more. I'm also trying to find some time to write, because it's been a little too crazy and my fics have all decided to hit complications all at once.

Ohai internets, long time no see.

Well, the job has concluded. Or at least I assume it has, since when I got there Sunday morning there were maybe 3 other cars in the lot and no one in the building. The two people I talked to also worked for Manpower (there were four staffing agencies) and hadn't worked Friday or Saturday, so our best guess? The project concluded one of those two days and Manpower friggin' forgot to tell us. I would've liked to know this before driving all the way out there, but at least it wasn't weekday traffic. The rest of the day felt like a bonus day after that, so whatever.

Still would've liked to know beforehand.

The job was terribly mind-numbing and boring, just verifying tax information (for the love of god, people, make your checks legible). At times I was reading the numbers to myself in Spanish to keep myself awake; otherwise I was zoning out like crazy. But it's done now (apparently), and I can go back to looking for something more permanent.

I have a lot to catch up on around the house and elsewhere, so I still don't know when I'll have time to catch up online. But I should be around more, at least.

I'm on the second day of training, so I think I can consider this a real job at this point ^^;. I've got some temp work for the month of April, so I'm probably going to be kinda scarce. It's nothing exciting, just data entry/data verification, but it's something. For the time being, anyway.

Mango Languages has greatly cut what they offer for free. Screw that, I'm not paying $160 for 3 months of access to one language :P. Time to see what the library has.

I'm trying to brush up on my Spanish, both for my job search and, well, because there are simply a lot of people around here who speak Spanish. But the majority of the teach-yourself-language books are geared toward travel. They have phrases like "where is the bank" and "I want seven postcards." There needs to be a language book aimed at service professionals. Most of the phrases would be about transactions and money and time. And the ever-present "the bathroom is that way" and "we're open until 9." Libraries would also need things like "you can't check this out on a youth card," "your fines are over the limit and you can't check out," and "this item has gone to billing, you need to turn it back in or pay for it." Of course, we can't always get native English speakers to understand those concepts.

Sarah, an adult with attention deficit disorder (ADD ADHD), like many clients I work with, feels that socializing is anything but fun.

“It’s work,” she says. “And hard work at that!” Sarah dreads many of the parties, family dinners, and business functions during the summer and the holidays.

“I never know what to say, especially with people I don’t know that well,” she adds. “Any way you look at it, I’m in trouble when I go to a party.”

Sarah jumps from topic to topic in a conversation, and doesn’t listen effectively to the person she’s talking with. I worked with her to develop strategies that would make her feel comfortable the next time she heads out.

Y'know, it's gratifying to know it's not just me.

On a completely different topic, I haven't seen eps. 10 or 11 of Brotherhood yet :P. I was waiting for Funimation to watch 10, and that was right when they went down (for the second time). I can't get torrents to play so Eclipse's fansubs are useless to me.

But! There was tyco drumming last night at the library. They were such a treat to listen to. I got to watch them out the back door while minding the desk. We did have one neighbor complaining about the noise and threatening to call the police if they didn't "keep it down." Um, sorry? The drums kinda only have one volume, and it's well before curfew. The police really aren't going to do anything -_-;;. But everyone else thought it was great.
