Eh...

Apple's iPad (finally) goes on sale

I just can't get excited about the iPad. It's new and techy and geeky and all, but it's impractical. Too big to function as a PDA. Can't really type on it without extra equipment. Doesn't reduce eye strain like ereaders. Can't run multiple programs at a time. Also apparently doesn't have ports for USB or storage cards. I don't want a hybrid between a PDA and a netbook, I want a PDA and a netbook. A Mac netbook, which Apple is not giving us. It gave us this ... not-computer not-PDA not-ereader not-convenient scifi-tech-wanabe thing instead.

Needless to say I won't be running out to buy one.

My beloved got an Xperia today and is running circles in the roof at the moment, squeeing about multitasking, googlemaps, smilerecognition, countless apps and you name it. I won't be able to get through until next week by the look of it.

Now that's a useful device! Pocket-sized, multitasking, and a physical keyboard!

The iPad is pretty meh. I just can't get excited about a product that's basically four iPod Touch's taped together but has less functionality because it can't multitask.

I used to think that anyone who wanted one was a complete moron or a mac worshiper until my friend pointed out that it'd be great for the non-geek because it probably does everything they want (ereader, HD graphics, etc.) and I agree with that...but I still think it's on the top of "Ways to Waste Your Money (by Apple)" list.

Personally, I can't wait until the new iPhone comes out! It sounds like it's going to be awesome and may even have an OS that supports multitasking. :D

I'm thinking a lot of the excitement is from people who love their iPhone/iPod and want a bigger screen. Which I guess I can see, but for me a lot of the usefulness is lost if you can't stick it in your pocket. (And it annoys me that Apple gave us *this* instead of a true netbook.) It's definitely one of those "devices people don't need (but will spend money on anyway)."

Multitasking iPhone would be rad ^^. I'm still waiting for one with a physical keyboard, though.
