There's no such thing as a free lunch...
...but apparently there's free dinner.
Mom and I went out to dinner last night for my birthday, which was earlier in the week (which I all but forgot about, despite
shawk wishing me happy birthday in her journal several days before). We went to this Chinese place downtown that has really good food, but not a lot of dining room space. There was only one table free, and a couple in front of us. We'd had an idle chat with them about how crowded it was, as we're not used to seeing it like that. So when the waitress seats them, they turn around and ask if we'd like to join them. Well, sure, why not.
They were very nice, and very interesting people. They'd traveled all around Europe and Britain, and told us about this nice little island in Germany, and how they'd stayed in a (renovated) castle in Ireland, and how they were in France on 9/11/01, and first heard the news from a Portuguese woman sitting near them on the tour bus who'd gotten a call on her cell phone. Oh yeah, and the woman of this couple is from the Azores, one island away from the island my grandfather was from.
So somewhere in the conversation it came up that this was for my birthday ("so how old are you?" "27." "27?? Wow! I would have guessed 20!" standard comments exchanged). When the checks come, the man grabs them both, and says "would you mind if a paid for your birthday dinner?"
What are we going to say, no? So we got our dinner paid for by this nice older couple who were already being extremely nice by letting us share their table. Mom and I spend the ride home going "did that just happen?" "I can't believe that just happened."
