A comment on my asian elves sketch: "Has nobody ever heard the theory that elves actually originated from the way people looked at asians?"

Um... I fail to see the point this person is trying to make. The elves of Celtic/British mythology were quite tall and fair, and that hardly describes the vast majority of Asians. Is s/he trying to say that making Asian elves is redundant or something? I suspect s/he is just trying to disturb shit that isn't there. You will notice that this person didn't leave an e-mail or even a name.

And if they're trying to upset me they're doing a poor job, since I mostly want to just shake my head and laugh.

What the hell? Did the people who originated fey mythology even know that Asain people existed?

Somehow I don't think there was much contact between East and West way back then, y'know?

That's what I'm thinking.

Who tries to flame an Elfwood gallery, anyway?

A fair number of people, sadly. I think some people see the internet as a place they can be ratbastards. I've been fairly lucky - but then, my galleries don't get noticed much, so it stands to reason I don't get many idiots.

What lamos. I mean, I should have guessed that nowhere was immune from online wankery, but Elfwood?

I think I know what they were *trying* to say...

Probably they're refering to how *modern* mythology (especially comic books) tend to make elves a bit Asian looking..not in body type, mind you, but the almond-shaped eyes, high cheek bones..that sort of thing.

I haven't looked at the drawing yet, just adding two bits from what immediately came to mind..as far as I know, it *is* an illustration trend that I've seen in various fantasy illustrations..to make elves have an Asian or at least most Eastern type of culture than western, especially in clothing and appearance..because it helps to make them more "exotic".

Anyway, just babbling...they're probably not flaming, just inarticulate.

True, modern D&D influenced elves tend to be rather Asian-esque, especially since they've gone from tall to short (except that most of 'em seem to be blond). I can see where they got their "theory," but still - poorly thought out and bad way of expressing it.
