A note on art sites

Aaaaarrgh people! No matter what size your image is while you're working on it, on the Web it will display at 72 dpi! This means that the nice 8"x11" scan you have? If you keep it at 300 dpi, it will display at over 2000 pixels. And just so you know, that's a wee bit big for most monitors.

Why is this such a hard concept for some people?

But I just LOVE scrolling from here to yonder trying take in all of a monster-sized image! Because why on earth would I want to behold the beauty of it at one fell swoop? Duh!

Lol! It is a safety precaution. We lowly mortals would certainly topple over for good from that much bliss presented at once.

Too, there are A LOT of non-computer savy people who use LJ (like those that would have to google dpi because they don't know what it means).

I actually think art sites should do more to explain this little detail to people for just that reason, but even on ones that have size limits I still find huge pictures. What I'm really not understanding is how people don't see this and go "hmm, why is pic uploading so ginormous?"

I actually think the art sites should do a lot more to explain this ^^;. But I really don't get why people don't look at their uploads and wonder why they're so big. But I'm guessing a lot of people don't look after they've uploaded.

I do check but I don't know how to fix it. I usually just pick another version of the same or re-upload it. Of course, I can make changes easily because it isn't my art or anything important to me. A little tutorial would be nice, very useful.

This is aimed at people who post at places like deviantART, PaperDemon, etc. whom I do expect to look into image sizing at least somewhat. The main thing to remember is that, for the screen, what's important isn't the inches but the pixels. Any art program should be able to tell you what the image size (not the print size) is in pixels as well as the pixels per inch/dpi. An image size over about 800 pixels is probably too big for most screens.
