From the book Sex at Dawn:
pg. 78: [comparing humans with chimps and bonobos] There is a high degree of variability in potential sexual combinations in humans and bonobos; homosexual activity is common in both, but rare in chimps. [Bonobos are the only primate besides us that has sex for reasons other than reproduction.]
....
pg. 103: Recognized as a way to build and maintain a network of mutually beneficial relationships, nonreproductive sex no longer requires special explanations. Homosexuality, for example, becomes far less confusing, in that is is, as E. O. Wilson has written, "above all a form of bonding . . . consistent with the greater part of heterosexual behavior as a device that cements relationships."

In other words, homosexuality is not only 100% natural, it likely evolved because it was a benefit to society.

And ladies, there's evidence that we might all be a little bit gay.

Samhain is actually tomorrow but CAYA coven celebrated last night, and let's just say I'm more than ready for a fresh start. The old year is dead. But more on that in a later post. Right now I want to share a low-carb alternative to all the sugary treats around this time of year. Someone posted this recipe on a message board (I found it by searching for "low-carb protein bar recipe") and hopefully they won't mind me passing it along. They're really yummy, and don't take very long to make:

Low-Carb Chocolate Coconut Protein "Squares"

⅓ cup coconut oil
¼ cup whipping cream
2 tbsp DaVinci® Sugar Free Syrup
1 tbsp butter
1 cup chocolate whey protein powder
⅔ cup powdered milk
½ cup cocoa
½ cup powdered erythritol
1 cup unsweetened desiccated coconut (divided)

In food processor, process coconut oil, whipping cream, DaVinci® Syrup, butter, chocolate whey protein, powdered milk, cocoa, and erythritol. Stir in ¾ cup coconut. Press into lightly greased 9x5-inch loaf pan, Sprinkle remaining coconut over top and press into mixture. Freeze until firm and then refrigerate. Alt: roll into balls, roll in the coconut and then cocoa powder, then freeze.

The erythritol can make them a bit gritty, but otherwise they taste like fudge. I leave out the milk powder and use chocolate flavored syrup for a dark chocolate taste, but any flavor syrup that would go well with chocolate would work. I also used MimicCreme instead of whipping cream, and that plus the erythritol made the Vitamix choke; I don't know if that would be a problem with real whipping cream, but I've taken to mixing just the liquids and cocoa powder in the Vitamix and stirring the rest in by hand. I've also made them with half erythritol and half stevia and they were a bit denser, but still turned out.

My recipe totals, using the MimicCreme and EAS Whey protein powder, are 78.6g protein, 130.4g fat, 29.4g carb. If you assume 26 truffles, that gives each 3.0g protein, 5.0g fat, 1.1g carb

In this house, they don't last long ^_^. But they're so low in carbs that it's okay to indulge.

I'm really sorry about this, but I've hit a rough patch that is making it hard to write :(. Be assured that nothing has been abandoned. I'll get back onto things as soon as I'm sure it won't mean sub-standard work, I promise!

Yesterday was the Art Walk. I had a much better spot this year and the entire layout was better, and I didn't do too bad with sales. The only down sides were that the spot was VERY sunny, and we were being dive-bombed by pincher-bugs WTF. We were right in front of a rosemary bush that was covered by bees and that's what we were expecting to have to deal with, but the bees were pretty much minding their own business. What kept invading were pincher-bugs. Apparently earwigs can fly, which is news to me. No idea what they were doing out and about in broad daylight (they're supposed to be nocturnal!) but they were landing all over the place.

Otherwise, aside from an epic display fail at the beginning of the day (there's a picture over on facebook), it went pretty smoothly. I thought ahead for once and brought a parasol, one I got in Disneyland when I was 13 and have never used, so the sun was tolerable. Mom played support staff and did food runs and the like. I made back table fees plus a little that'll let me buy some supplies I've been needing. I'll probably be making a trip to Altamont Beads and Treasures before long for some silver wire, and I need more ear posts. I'd also like to get some small split-rings and a split-ring tool.

The shop's back up with the sold items removed, and I'll try to add more over the next few weeks. I'm getting a better idea of what sells and what doesn't, though a lot of it is still pretty hap-hazard.

A literary agent offered to represent a YA manuscript - on the condition that one of the main characters be made straight or have his POV and any mention of his sexuality cut.

These authors aren't the only ones with a story like that. It's 2011 and this kind of unseen discrimination is happening - and not just with sexuality; authors have been told to change characters' race, disability, even gender. That article talks about it much better than I could, and also has list of books to consider if you want to "vote with your wallet" in support of diversity in books.

I wish I had a more normal relationship with food. It'd be nice to just eat things without having something start turning my stomach all of a sudden. It'd be nice to be able to eat and enjoy a bigger variety of things, too.

(-barely got through my eggs this morning because they started wigging me out. And I like eggs.)

Ganked from just about everyone at this point:

Name me a character in one of my fandom (FMA), and I will tell you:
* How I feel about this character
* All the people I ship romantically with this character
* My non-romantic OTP for this character
* My unpopular opinion about this character
* One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon
* Something about them I consider true, though it's just head canon/fanon
