....I realized that the friend who would've been most excited about this died some years ago, after her life had pretty much bottomed out.

California's Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriages is unconstitutional, a three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled today in a much-anticipated decision from the nation's most populous state. The judges upheld a lower court's ruling.
From here but really, this story is everywhere right now.
This isn't the end of it by a long shot, but it's one more step in the right direction. I'm certain it's going to go to the Supreme Court next, which means yet another round of hoping and waiting, but still. One more step forward.

Disavow Rekers and "conversion therapy"
May. 20th, 2010 12:44 pmThis mainly applies to CA and the Prop. 8 trail, but this "conversion therapy" bullshit goes beyond that. Anyway, this is Courage Campaign's form letter about it:

Have you heard about Dr. George Rekers in the news lately, from the New York Times to the Rachel Maddow show?
Rekers is the right-wing "expert" that promotes "conversion therapy" for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. And he also just got caught hiring a male prostitute to go on a European vacation with him, exposing his hypocrisy to the world.
Rekers has destroyed countless lives with his advocacy for "conversion therapy." I just signed a letter from the Courage Campaign demanding that the organizations that support Rekers and his work disavow him and "conversion therapy."

This seems more like an abuse of the legal system than an actual effort to protect children.
A U.S. comic book collector is being sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty to importing and possessing Japanese manga books depicting illustrations of child sex and bestiality.
Christopher Handley was sentenced in Iowa on Thursday, (.pdf) almost a year after pleading guilty to charges of possessing “obscene visual representations of the sexual abuse of children.”
The 40-year-old was charged under the 2003 Protect Act, which outlaws cartoons, drawings, sculptures or paintings depicting minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct, and which lack “serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.” Handley was the nation’s first to be convicted under that law for possessing cartoon art, without any evidence that he also collected or viewed genuine child pornography.

Comic fans were outraged, saying jailing someone over manga does not protect children from sexual abuse.

What I always want to know is how this got past product testing in the first place. Aren't they supposed to look for these kinds of things? Especially with children's products. The lawn chair that amputated fingers was bad enough, but a stroller??

Feb. 5th, 2009 11:38 amOkay, so, yesterday I read a news article saying that the courts would be hearing arguments about Prop. 8 next month. Last night - prompted by the article, I suppose - I dreamt I was arguing with someone about how Prop. 8 cut off a huge source of potential revenue and how that was just stupid to do when our economy needs all the help it can get, "Do you realize how much revenue this state has lost by not allowing gay marriage??".
And then today Courage Campaign sent out its "Don't divorce us" video. So help me, I teared up. I know I'm a sap, but still.
