I'm apparently in a funk of "can't write." It's not really writer's block, I know what happens in this scene, but the words keep falling flat. The boys are being very uncooperative.
"Can't we just get to--?"
"No. You must get through this boring political crap first."
"But but but--"
"It's called plot, okay?? Give me a break, there's little enough of it as it is."
">:P"
"Yeah, yeah, I know *sigh*..."
I think I might go write an unrelated vignette or two just to get things flowing.
Tangentially, I was reading a blog post recently about different styles of writing. It was reassuring to know that there's at least one professional author whose style is very similar to mine. Apparently, he doesn't write out a plot or outline, but "daydreams" about the characters and the world off and on all day, so that when he sits down to write he has a pretty good idea of what's going to happen. I was at work though, so I couldn't exactly give the crow of validation I wanted.
Another author has the technique of writing out the full first draft, and then deleting it, and starting over from scratch. She does this because the when she writes the first draft, she doesn't know the characters or the world very well yet. The second draft comes from a place of being much more comfortable and familiar. Okay, I can see where she's coming from, and starting over from scratch instead of rewriting isn't a bad idea, but - dude. Wholesale deletion o_o;;. She is a braver woman than I. I think the world would spin off its axis if I ever deleted anything.
Edit: put out some 700 words today total. I can be satisfied with that.
