Okay, I've been on Tumblr for a few weeks now, and my verdict is: great soapbox, really lousy for actually interacting with anyone. Really, really lousy. I have no idea why someone would use it as their primary blog or why fandoms would move there instead of lj/dw or other places you can actually talk to people.

Agreed. Twitter is another one I don't get. Tried it, didn't even last a week.

I think I've more or less decided to stick with LJ, although I don't know if I'll renew my paid account when it expires. It's the icons, damn it- they're like crack to me. They gave me an extra six months free so it gives me some time to think about it. I don't mind popping in on DW (aside from snagging something from the occasional graphics post, you're the only one I bother coming over to comment for), but since 99% of my flist is still on LJ, I'm fairly positive that I'll be staying there.

Twitter works best if a bunch of your friends are also active on Twitter, then you get a multi-person IM conversation going. Unfortunately that's not how it works for me. But I like it for browsing headlines. But at least on Twitter you talk to people. Tumblr seems more like a bunch of isolated people monologging. Yeah, you can leave people notes, but there's no good way for them to reply except by more monologging. "Community" it is not.

It is too freaking complicated, too impersonal ...plus I just discovered that a 12 yo is re-blogging my videos. joy.

You'd think they'd have a way to set age controls ^^;. Not that the kids wouldn't get around that, but still. I've also noticed that if you put the right tags on something it doesn't matter if it's a bad cellphone photo of an unfinished painting, people will reblog, which is.. nice, I guess, but odd.

I do like Tumblr for what it is (a soapbox), but for "community"... it's pretty lacking.

Right? I tried it once, but the not being able to interact with your friends is what drove me off from it. Though I do still go over now and again to catch up on a few blogs there.

Yeah, it's great for lurking and looking at pretty pictures, but that's about it. I'm finding myself annoyed when I see someone posting something there that would be more appropriate for here :/
