44. turpentine kisses and mistaken blows

Roy wondered what Edward’s family must think of their relationship. They were more likely to exchange snips and jabs than affectionate words, and insults were their idea of endearments. It was unconventional, but it worked for them. But he did worry at times that the Rockbells might think he was bringing out Ed’s worst.

That is, until the first time he heard Mrs. Rockbell giving Ed a hard time for no reason that he could discern, something which quickly devolved into an insult war about height. But they probably did think he was crazy for the way he started laughing.

45. rings

“S’stupid.”

“Mm.”

“It’s an archaic tradition.”

“So it is.”

“People can attach all the symbolism to it they want, but it’s just bits of metal.”

“That’s true.”

“Not like it ever stops anyone. If someone wanted to fool around, I mean. S’not some magic talisman.”

“No, it isn’t.”

“Waste of money. That’s all jewelry is, anyway, but they charge more than the gold is even worth for these.”

“The price was hardly a hardship.”

“Still a waste of money.”

“Mm.”

“Still don’t get why you were so set on this. It’s stupid.”

“Is that why you can’t leave it alone?”

56. the beginning is the end is the beginning

“So . . . that’s it, then.”

“Yes. That’s it.”

Ed leaned back against his shoulder. “Didn’t . . . actually think we’d get here. So . . . that’s it.”

Roy smiled. “Mm . . . but don’t worry. It will never be truly over.”

“Huh?”

“Human nature, Fullmetal. As a culture, as a species, we can’t let anything be. There will always be someone to stir thing up. To upset the balance.”

“To make a shit-load of trouble so that people like us have to step in to keep it from running downhill.”

“Exactly.”

He bumped his head against the other man’s shoulder. “That . . . actually makes me feel better.”

57. door

He knew what it was. The moment he arrived, before he’d even turned around, something inside him had resonated with the barren landscape and the ominous presence looming behind him and even though he couldn’t have put a name to it he knew. He’d felt dread before, but never the soul deep terror that had washed through him the moment those doors started to open. He understood now why so few alchemists survived the experience.

But throughout, one thought, one realization kept echoing in his mind: He’d never fully appreciated just what those boys had gone through.

He did now.
