Doesn't help much if you have firefox blocking the ads and they still pop up.

Hmmm. Perhaps it's because you and dragonimp both have Plus accounts, then. (I maintain a Paid account, and so never see ads on LJ, anyway.)

This page has a link to downgrade accounts if anyone is interested in doing so.

That's probably the case. I know mines not paid. Don't know about dragonimp's account. I'll just deal with the ads, not too much trouble as I don't use LJ that much unless I'm posting videos.

It actually states on the userinfo page what level account a person is using, with a little "gift" link right next to the account level. That's how I know you're both using Plus accounts. ;)

I might have to try that; Safari has popup windows blocked, but these are getting through anyway. Maybe Firefox'll be more robust.

I am a paid user so I usually don't see the ads but I just happened to be looking at a page not logged in and experienced my whole screen turning dark grey for about two minutes while some ad yakked at me. Yes, it was very very annoying.

Those are the ones. They just showed up in the last couple days. I don't mind the banner adds, they're unobtrusive, but I don't like my window to be hijacked -_-
