Some people...

I was helping this guy at the deli counter, and there was a woman nearby who was talking on her cell phone in Spanish. The guy indicated the woman, then said with a can-you-believe-these-people look on his face "And I thought we were in America."
I thought that telling him to fuck off might be considered rude, so I shrugged and kept the I'm-in-public-service smile on my face. Really, if ya don't want to hear Spanish, get out of the goddamn Bay Area. Or better yet, get out of California altogether.
I mean, geez, if you're talking with someone who has the same native language, then it would be pretty silly if you didn't use said native language. She wasn't expecting any of the rest of us to understand her. She used perfectly understandable English when she ordered from the deli.
Yeah, I thought we were in America, too. Y'know, the supposed land of freakin' tolerance.
There was another time, a month or two ago, when another guy said something that made fun of my coworker's accent. To her face. Thankfully I think she missed it, although I can't be sure because she's not the kind who would react. He tried to catch my eye but I was suddenly very intent on whatever I was doing, because I wasn't sure I could have kept from glaring.
Geez. Mommy, can I go found my own country?
