(Okay, LJ's random reloading of the page and consiquently deleting my writing is getting annoying. At least I had only gotten the subject written.)

Saw Lara Croft Tomb Raider the Cradle of Life and The Matrix: Reloaded today. I must say, despite their flaws, they're both very fun movies. Cradle of Life was reminicent of the first Tomb Raider movie in a lot of ways, but not so much that it ws like watching the first movie over again. A lot of predictable elements ("How much you wanna bet these two aren't going to last 'till the end of the movie?... Yup, there, they bit it.") There was a new ex-boyfriend she has to work with and the familiar we-dated-and-broke-up-but-are-still-attracted-to-each-other tension. They're both kept in character, though, which is nice. Lots and lots of (in my opinion) drawn out fight scenes, with lots of things that shatter and break (a room full of glass walls! Watch it be destoryed!) but they're so out there in a lot of ways that they're still fun to watch. The same can be said of the jetski scene at the begining and the motorcycle scene a bit farther in. Gratuitous, but well done fun all the same. One thing I liked was someone actually thought to grab Lara's ponytail while they were fighting. But something I could have done without was the long scene of someone coughing up blood while dying from what was supposed to be an excellerated form of ebola.

The basic plot is that Lara finds this orb that is a map to the location of the Cradle of Life, which contains Pandora's Box. Pandora's Box, in this case, contains a plauge. It's part of the balance of life and death. Kinda odd, but they make it work.
spoilers! )
Overall, fun to watch, good special effects (except for the floating "stone" pillars at one point), and consistant characters, even if the Bad Guys are a bit stereotypical.
P.S.: Only a few people are going to get this, but there was a scene of them walking into a dark, dead, and very freaky forest where there are supposed to be these shadow monster things, and they kept showing shots of baboon faces, and I suddenly had the urge to break out into (I'm going to spell this wrong, I'm sure) "Aragh Gruagagh!"

Matrix: Reloaded also loved it's overlong action scenes. The choriography of the fighting is fun to watch, though, so I could deal, although the car chase could have been cut almost in half without losing much. It's much darker and deeper than the first Matrix. Almost over the top in parts, but not quite. Very pretty cinematography, though. They show Zion, and there's a scene of what's basically a giant mosh pit in slow motion, juxtaposed with a Neo/Trinity sex scene. Longer than it needed to be, maybe, but artisticly very nice, and they never show body parts that's shouldn't be shown. Not that Neo and Trinity are ever covered up by anything but each other, and you get a full side view of them a couple times, but it's well posed. It also poses some very interesting questions to the characters, such as maybe the whole prophesy is a farse orchestrated by the machines in the first place. The new villans are fun and kinda trippy, and the then of course there are the multiple Agent Smiths who, at one point, make was looks like a giant orgy pile on top of Neo.

This one is very definitly the second act in a three-act story, and it doesn't really end. It just stops. But it was still fun.

Anyway, I'm going to stop now while I'm still awake. I apologise for any and all spelling mistakes. The spell check option sometimes erases the entry.
