Jun. 17th, 2005 12:16 pmIn the first Fruits Basket episode, Kyo taunts Yuki with nezu ko, which the subtitles translated as "prince of rats." But ko means "child"; "prince" is ouji (can't make the little - over the o, dammit). "Rat boy," which is how it was translated in the manga, makes much more sense, and is more in line with Kyo's personality. (Incidentally, he also says "rat boy" in the dub, but I had to force myself to listen to it because Yuki's voice makes me cringe. Eee, bad dubbing.)
Speaking of dubs, the one for Fullmetal Alchemist isn't too bad. Only, it's not too good, either. Ed sounds too old, especially in the flashbacks. Same with Winry. The acting itself isn't bad, they just don't sound at all like 12-year-olds. Roy sounds like much more of a jerk in the dub; yeah, he's a jerk in the original, but not to the degree they put in the dub. The original is much more ambiguous. It does have its moments, though (Ed saying "whoopdy-flippin'-do" made me chuckle). Overall, the dub is decent; it just loses something.
