Even aside from the car fiasco(s) last week was a pretty shitty week for me. I don't really want to bitch and moan, though, so instead I thought I'd share this bit of magic from The Secret of Kells:

If you haven't seen this movie yet, do so. This is animation at its finest.

fanime 2011

dragonimp: (mustache WTF)
Okay. Fanime. This was the first time I've had a table and it went moderately well. I didn't sell many prints - maybe 4 prints and 3 bookmarks - but overall I did make back table cost plus some. If I was to include hotel and parking it would still be at a loss, but it wasn't bad. I got an idea of what people are looking for and what sells there, and I have some ideas on how to improve the display. I met up with an old friend from high school who had found me on facebook, and met the person behind PaperDemon, who seems cool. I do have some pictures but they're not imported from the camera yet, I'll post those later.

The hardest thing, though, is dealing with meals. I'm not sure what people do when they're by themselves.

Back from con and pretty worn out. I'llpost in more detail later, after I've gotten a nigt's sleep in a decent bed (and have turned the computer on). I just want to say that I love my mom; she paid for the hotel and played roadie for me all weekend, and put up with my stressed-out snippiness. I don't think I could have done all this without her help. It certainly wouldn't have gone as smoothly.

Anyway, that's about as much as I want to type from my phone. More later when I have some coherency.

Didn't get Raptured. Went wine tasting instead. Probably had a lot more fun.

And it was fun. But between all the wind today and the wine I've had a bit of a sinus headache all afternoon. Not a bad one, but enough to make it hard to focus on much. Consequently wasn't up for chat :(. Next weekend is Fanime so I might not catch you all until the week after that. Tomorrow starts the buckling down and really getting ready for the con.

The Web is becoming disturbingly Big Brotherish in the guise of being "helpful":

It amuses me that my mom now experiences what I've always gone through when shopping, how in the entire display of jeans or slacks there's maybe 3 size 6, and 2 of those are 6-short. This does mean we're having a harder time telling our clothes apart, though.

I suppose I should've posted the memes separate from the request for a beta, but I doubt it would've made a difference to either.

Just in general I miss being able to talk about writing. I miss being able to geek out and I miss the hey I'm stuck help me figure out what this character is doing kind of thing and I miss critical feedback. I know I'm too close to my own writing to see it clearly.

And I'm going to shut up before I dig this any deeper.

I scared everyone off by asking for critique, didn't I.

Mom and I got lunch at a nearby Panera after taking care of some business at the social security office. Our salads came with apples, but since the salad was pretty sweet on its own we were saving the apples for later. Anyway, I finished first and was examining the apples (they're fujis, the red and green patterns are interesting, you can see how the sun must've hit them as they were hanging on the tree - I spent a year painting apples in school, I can't help it). I do realize when I think about it that most people don't really stare at apples (or most anything) quite that closely, but they're fascinating and mom and I were talking about possible compositions (did I mention I painted apples?) - when one of the staff walked by and asked if there was something wrong with the apple and did I need it replaced? Because I was staring at it awfully intently and I could get it replaced if I wanted.

That would've been funny enough, but my knee-jerk reaction was along the lines of "No! My apples! You can't take my apples!" which I thankfully didn't actually say.

Rewrites partly done. I will want to run these through a beta, if anyone's up for it. A good harsh beta, preferably.

And on that note:
THE ANONYMOUS WRITING FEEDBACK MEME

"Feedback" means tear into it. You can post anonymous.

And a bit lighter:
Name one of my fics in comments (or a scene from one of them) and I will (try to) tell you what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the characters' heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

(The challenge will be to see if I remember.)

Happy Beltane/May Day!

I went to a Beltane celebration last night with the CAYA coven. A bit far to drive, but very nice. I'd like something a little closer to home, but they seem like a good group. And I found out there's a pagan festival next Saturday that sounds like fun.

Anyway, happy spring/summer for everyone else, don't let the allergies get you down.

The show has been elaborately made to the point that producers turned to a professional at something called the Language Creation Society to design a vocabulary for the savage Dothraki nomads who provide some of the more Playboy-TV-style plot points and who are forced to speak in subtitles. Like “The Tudors” and “The Borgias” on Showtime and the “Spartacus” series on Starz, “Game of Thrones,” is a costume-drama sexual hopscotch, even if it is more sophisticated than its predecessors. It says something about current American attitudes toward sex that with the exception of the lurid and awful “Californication,” nearly all eroticism on television is past tense. The imagined historical universe of “Game of Thrones” gives license for unhindered bed-jumping — here sibling intimacy is hardly confined to emotional exchange.

The true perversion, though, is the sense you get that all of this illicitness has been tossed in as a little something for the ladies, out of a justifiable fear, perhaps, that no woman alive would watch otherwise. While I do not doubt that there are women in the world who read books like Mr. Martin’s, I can honestly say that I have never met a single woman who has stood up in indignation at her book club and refused to read the latest from Lorrie Moore unless everyone agreed to “The Hobbit” first. “Game of Thrones” is boy fiction patronizingly turned out to reach the population’s other half.

From here.

As a woman who's been reading fantasy since she discovered reading, I ... don't really know what to say to that. So many wrong assumptions I don't even know where to start.
